Wallpapering Services

Feature Walls

A single feature wall in a bedroom, living room, or dining room is one of the most popular choices we handle. Pattern selection and positioning make the difference between a considered result and an accidental one.

We advise on drop matching, panel centring, and pattern placement before cutting a single piece. For rooms with painted surroundings, see our interior painting page.

Full Room Wallpapering

A fully wallpapered room creates an entirely different effect from a single feature wall. Corners, reveals, and window recesses all require precise cutting and matching.

We work methodically around the room from a set true vertical. Every seam is aligned and every pattern matched before moving on.

Lining Paper

Lining paper creates a smooth, even base for decorating. It is the correct preparation step for walls with minor imperfections, old textured paint, or previously stripped wallpaper.

We hang lining paper horizontally to ensure lining seams do not coincide with wallpaper seams above. This prevents seam telegraphing and gives a clean, even finish.

Period Properties and Cornicing

Hanging wallpaper in rooms with original cornicing, deep picture rails, and dado rails requires precise cutting at every junction. Rooms in Georgian and Edwardian properties have these features throughout.

We handle all period architectural features carefully. We advise on continuation patterns across doorways and chimney breast reveals at the site visit.

Wallpaper Removal

Removing old wallpaper before re-hanging or painting is part of most wallpapering projects. Old paper painted over is the most challenging to remove without damaging the plaster beneath.

Where original lime plaster sits behind old wallpaper, we take a gentler approach. See our feature wall painting page if you prefer a painted feature wall instead.

Here’s How It Works

1. Surface Assessment

We inspect the walls before hanging. We check for uneven surfaces, damp, and the condition of existing plasterwork. Wallpaper should not go onto an uneven or damp surface.

2. True Vertical Setting

We establish a true vertical using a spirit level, regardless of room corners. Out-of-plumb walls in Georgian properties require this step to prevent pattern drift.

3. Paste Preparation

Paste type is matched to the paper weight and manufacturer’s instructions. Heavy embossed papers require a different paste than standard printed papers. We follow the manufacturer’s guidance exactly.

4. Hanging and Matching

Paper is hung from the set vertical and worked in both directions around the room. Pattern drops are matched on the paste table before each piece goes up. Seams are rolled flat once each piece is positioned.

5. Final Check and Trimming

All joints, corners, and edges are checked after the paper has dried. Any lifting edges are re-stuck. Top and bottom trims are checked for straightness.

Wallpapering Costs in York

Prices below are estimates only. Every room is different. Call 01904 935508 for a precise quote.

What Drives the Price

Wallpapering costs depend on the number of drops, the complexity of the pattern, and the condition of the walls. Three factors drive the final price.

Pattern Repeat

A large pattern repeat generates significant waste. Each piece must be cut from the correct point in the pattern. A small all-over pattern or plain paper wastes less and costs less per room.

Room Complexity

A room with a chimney breast, bay window, dado rail, and picture rail has far more cutting and fitting. York’s Victorian and Georgian rooms often fall into the complex category.

Typical Price Ranges

Single feature wall (standard bedroom or living room, simple pattern): £200 to £400 including preparation and hanging.

Pattern wallpapering in a Georgian sitting room (Water Lane, Clifton): £400 to £700 depending on pattern repeat and room size.

Full room wallpapering (Victorian living room, Bishopthorpe Road, full walls with dado and picture rail): £600 to £1,000 or more depending on complexity and paper type.
