Staircase Painters in York

Clean white painted staircase by York Painters, professional staircase painting in York

York Painters are staircase painters working on period and modern properties across the city’s inner suburbs and surrounding villages.

What we cover:

  • Balusters and spindles
  • Handrail and newel posts
  • Stair risers and treads
  • Understairs area and storage
  • Victorian and Edwardian staircases with original joinery

Three-storey Victorian terraces on Nunthorpe Avenue have full-height staircase runs with original turned newel posts, spindles, and handrails. These represent significant woodwork needing careful masking and cutting in, not just a quick brush-over.

Staircase Painting Services

Balusters and Spindles

Balusters and spindles are the most labour-intensive part of any staircase repaint. Victorian staircases may have 50 or more individual turned spindles, each painted individually.

We mask each spindle base carefully and paint with a suitable brush for the profile. For complete hallway and staircase wall painting, see our hallway painting page.

Handrail and Newel Posts

The handrail and newel posts take the most physical contact of any element, so the finish must be durable. We use appropriate satin or eggshell finishes for handrails — easier to wipe down and more resistant to hand marks than flat finishes.

Original turned newel posts in Victorian properties often carry decades of paint build-up. We assess whether stripping is needed to restore profile definition before repainting.

Stair Risers and Treads

Risers are painted and treads are painted or stained depending on the finish agreed. Paint on treads in a high-traffic staircase must be a hard-wearing floor paint, not standard emulsion or gloss.

We advise on riser and tread finish at the site visit. The number of coats and paint type depend on foot traffic levels.

Understairs Area

The understairs cupboard or storage area is often neglected in a staircase repaint. Painting the interior in a light neutral colour transforms a dark storage area.

We include this in the scope where requested. It is priced as part of the overall staircase quote.

Victorian and Edwardian Staircases

Original staircases in Victorian and Edwardian properties are a significant feature of these homes. A correctly prepared and finished staircase in a period property looks better than any modern equivalent.

Where paint build-up has softened profile definition, we advise on stripping and restoring before repainting. For the full interior approach across period rooms, see our interior painting page.

Here’s How It Works

1. Site Visit and Assessment

We examine all joinery elements, note paint condition and build-up, count spindles and balusters, and agree the scope. A written quote including spindle count is produced before starting.

2. Preparation

Loose and flaking paint is stripped back. High-build areas on handrails and newel posts are sanded. Spindle bases are cleaned and all surfaces sanded to improve adhesion before priming.

3. Priming

Bare timber sections receive a wood primer. Previously painted sections in good condition receive a light sanding then proceed to finish coat. Each element is primed individually.

4. Paint Application

Handrail and newel posts first, then spindles from top to bottom, then risers and treads. Each element is allowed to dry before adjacent elements are started to prevent wet paint transfer.

5. Final Inspection

We inspect every spindle and all joinery from the bottom of the staircase looking up. Any missed sections or uneven coverage are touched up before we close the job.

What Drives the Price

Staircase painting costs depend on the spindle count, the number of flights, and the condition of the existing finish. Spindle count is the primary cost driver — a two-flight staircase with 20 spindles costs significantly less than a three-flight Victorian staircase with 60 or more.

Condition and Tread Finish

Paint build-up on spindles and newel posts requires additional stripping and sanding time. A staircase in reasonable condition with a sound existing finish costs less.

Painted treads cost less than stained and varnished treads. Hard-wearing floor paint on treads costs more per coat but is the correct product for a high-traffic surface.

Typical Price Ranges

Full staircase repaint (three-storey Victorian terrace, South Bank Avenue, including newel posts, spindles, handrail, and treads): £600 to £950 depending on spindle count and finish.

Two-flight semi staircase (1930s semi, Heworth or Acomb, standard spindles and newel posts): £350 to £550. Modern staircase (1980s detached, Haxby, clean lines with simple baluster profile): £280 to £420.
