Radiator Painting in York

York Painters provide radiator painting covering period cast-iron radiators, steel panel radiators, and column radiators across the city’s inner suburbs and surrounding villages.
What we cover:
- Cast-iron column radiators in period properties
- Steel panel radiators in modern homes
- Heat-resistant specialist finishes
- Colour matching to room schemes
- Stripping and repainting yellowed or damaged radiators
Victorian terraces in Heworth retrofitted with original-style cast-iron column radiators often have radiator paint that has yellowed heavily. Standard wall paint applied over a radiator will discolour again within months. Correct stripping and application of specialist heat-resistant finish resolves the problem permanently.

Cast-Iron Radiators
Original cast-iron column radiators in Victorian properties are a feature worth preserving. These radiators were retrofitted into many period homes in the 1980s and 1990s, and over time paint yellows and chips.
We strip the radiator to bare metal or to the existing sound finish, apply a heat-resistant primer, and finish with heat-resistant paint in the specified colour. For complete interior repaints including radiators, see our interior painting page.
Steel Panel Radiators
Modern steel panel radiators are usually painted in standard white from the factory. Over years of use, this factory finish yellows, chips, and looks tired. Repainting restores the appearance without replacement.
We sand the surface to dull the existing finish, clean and degrease thoroughly, and apply heat-resistant paint in the specified colour.
Column Radiators
Column radiators in both cast-iron and steel have a complex surface profile. Reaching between the columns requires appropriate brushes and patience — rushing leaves unpainted sections that are visible from the front.
We take the time to paint every surface of each column, including the sections between columns and the back of the radiator.
Heat-Resistant Paint
Standard emulsion or gloss applied to a radiator will soften, discolour, and chip within weeks. Radiators operate at 60–80 degrees Celsius — only heat-resistant specialist finishes are appropriate.
We use specialist heat-resistant paint as standard on every radiator job. Applying the wrong product is the most common cause of rapid finish failure.
Colour Matching
Radiators in a period property with coloured walls can be painted in the same colour as the wall, in the woodwork colour, or in a contrasting accent colour. We advise on colour relationships at the site visit.
Matt, eggshell, and satin finishes are available in heat-resistant formulations.

Here’s How It Works
1. Condition Assessment
We inspect the radiator surface, check for loose or flaking paint, assess the existing finish condition, and confirm the required colour. We turn the radiator off and allow it to cool before starting.
2. Preparation
Loose and flaking paint is stripped back to a sound base. The surface is sanded to dull any gloss and improve adhesion. The radiator is cleaned and degreased. Surrounding flooring and skirting boards are masked.
3. Priming
A heat-resistant primer is applied where bare metal has been exposed. This prevents rust and gives the finish coat a sound base.
4. Heat-Resistant Finish Coats
Two coats of heat-resistant paint are applied. Column sections are painted individually. Each coat is allowed to cure fully before the next is applied.
5. Handover
We remove masking and inspect the radiator from the front, side, and above. Any missed sections between columns are touched up immediately. The radiator can be turned back on after full cure.

Radiator Painting Costs in York
Prices below are estimates only. Every radiator is different. Call 01904 935508 for a precise quote.

What Drives the Price
A single radiator repaint typically costs between £70 and £180, depending on the type, size, and preparation required. Three things drive the price: radiator type, preparation required, and number of radiators.
A simple steel panel radiator costs less than a cast-iron column radiator — the column type has far more surface area and takes more time.
Preparation and Condition
A radiator with heavily yellowed or chipping paint requires stripping before repainting. This adds time and cost compared to a radiator in reasonable condition.
Multiple radiators done in a single visit are priced at a lower rate per radiator than a single unit. We advise on cost per unit at quotation.
Typical Price Ranges
Set of four cast-iron column radiators (Victorian terrace, Heworth Road): £280 to £480 depending on size and stripping required. Single steel panel radiator (1970s detached, Rawcliffe or Haxby): £70 to £120 including preparation and two finish coats.
Full house radiator set (whole-house repaint including all radiators, 6–8 units): £380 to £700 depending on type mix and condition. For bathroom radiators, see our bathroom painting page.
