Hallway Painters in York

York Painters are hallway painters working on properties across the city’s inner suburbs and surrounding villages, from Bishopthorpe Road and Clifton to Haxby, Poppleton, and Heworth.
What we cover:
- Hallway walls and ceilings
- Dado rails, picture rails, and coving
- Staircase walls and stairwells
- Scuff-resistant and washable finishes
- Narrow hallway solutions on Victorian terraces
Three-storey Victorian terraces have long, narrow hallways with high ceilings. Working without scaffolding while maintaining family access requires methodical planning.
We plan the working sequence from the first visit. The hallway stays accessible throughout.

Hallway Painting Services
Hallway Walls and Ceiling
The hallway is the first room visitors see and the most-used room. Hallway walls take more scuffs and marks than any other surface.
We recommend washable and scuff-resistant finishes as standard.
Period hallways have high ceilings, original coving, and multiple door frames. Cutting in around all of these takes more time per square metre.
For complete interior repaints, see our interior painting page.
Dado Rails and Picture Rails
Many Victorian and Edwardian hallways have original dado rails at approximately one metre from the floor. Wall treatment above and below is often different.
We paint these as coordinated schemes. Colour relationships are advised at the site visit.
Picture rails near the ceiling require precise hand-cutting at junctions with coving or ceiling. Masking tape alone is not used at these junctions.
Staircase Walls
The staircase wall is one of the longest continuous wall surfaces in most homes. Victorian terraces have full-height staircase walls running up three floors.
Working safely at this height requires methodical approach and appropriate access equipment.
We paint staircase walls in sequence from top to bottom. Each landing is completed before moving to the next.
For full staircase repaints, see our staircase painting page.

Hallway Finishes and Solutions

Scuff-Resistant Finishes
Hallways get used constantly and must withstand wiping down. Washable emulsion and scuff-resistant finishes are standard.
These cost a little more than standard emulsion but are correct for high-traffic rooms.
Narrow Hallway Solutions
Victorian terraces often have narrow entrance hallways with limited working space. We work with reduced footprint in tight spaces.
Schedule planning ensures each section dries before moving past it.
Here’s How It Works
1. Site Visit and Assessment
We measure the hallway and note ceiling height. Cornicing and rail features are identified. Scope is agreed. Three-storey properties have full staircase run assessed at the same visit.
2. Preparation
Scuffs, marks, and previous repairs are sanded back. Cracks in coving are filled and sanded. Loose or peeling paint is addressed.
3. Priming
Period hallways with lime plaster get breathable primer. Modern hallways get stabilising primer. Newly plastered areas get sealing coat.
4. Paint Application
Ceiling and coving first, then walls, then woodwork. Dado rail and picture rail zones are painted in sequence. Each coat dries fully before the next.
5. Final Walkthrough
All cutting-in junctions, door frame edges, and skirting lines are checked. Touch-ups are completed before we close the job.

What Drives the Price
A standard hallway and stairs repaint typically costs between £500 and £1,200, depending on height, the number of floors, and the woodwork detail present.
Three things drive the price: height and floor count, period detail such as cornicing and dado rails, and surface condition including lime plaster and multiple paint layers.
Typical Price Ranges
Hallway, stairs, and landing in a three-storey Victorian terrace: £700 to £1,100 depending on height.
Ground-floor hallway only in a 1930s semi: £300 to £500 including woodwork and ceiling. Full entrance hallway and landing in a 1970s detached: £450 to £700.
The staircase spindles and handrail are a separate scope. Contact us to discuss adding these to your hallway project. Call 01904 935508 to arrange a site visit and written quote.
