Door Painters in York

York Painters are door painters covering interior and exterior doors across period and modern properties in York and the surrounding villages.
What we cover:
- Interior panelled and flush doors
- Door frames and architraves
- Original Victorian and Edwardian door profiles
- Fire doors and utility doors
- Wardrobe and fitted storage doors
Original internal panelled doors across Heworth have been painted over many times. Built-up layers cause panels to stick and the finish looks heavy and shapeless.
Correct stripping and repainting restores both function and appearance. Each door is assessed individually at the site visit.

Door Painting Services
Interior Flush Doors
Flush doors in post-war and modern properties have smooth faces. Brush marks show clearly on smooth surfaces, so the primer stage is critical.
We sand flush doors carefully before priming and apply a suitable satin or eggshell finish. For complete interior painting including all doors and woodwork, see our interior painting page.
Panelled Doors
Original panelled doors in Victorian and Edwardian properties are worth preserving. The moulded panels, fielded edges, rails, and stiles are features that modern flush doors cannot replicate.
We strip back excessive paint build-up where it has softened the panel profile, prime correctly, and apply a satin or gloss finish.
Door Frames and Architraves
Door frames and architraves in period properties often carry as much paint build-up as the doors. We paint frames and architraves as part of the door project.
Architrave profiles in Clifton and Bishopthorpe Road properties are often original Victorian mouldings. Correct preparation maintains the profile definition.

Specialist Door Types

Fire Doors
Fire doors require specific finishes that do not compromise the door’s fire-rating. We advise on appropriate products for fire doors at the site visit.
Wood Painting for Doors
Original timber doors and joinery have been decorated and stripped many times. Residual paint in the grain needs thorough preparation before new coats adhere cleanly.
For broader timber work, see our front door painting page. For the full hallway project covering doors, frames, and walls, see our hallway painting page.
Here’s How It Works
1. Door-by-Door Assessment
We inspect every door in the project. Paint build-up is checked, free movement is tested, and stripping requirements are agreed.
2. Stripping Where Required
Excessive paint build-up is stripped using hot air gun or chemical stripper. Panel profiles are restored to their original definition before priming.
3. Preparation
Doors are sanded to the appropriate profile, filled where needed, and cleaned before primer. The preparation standard for doors is higher than for walls.
4. Priming
The correct primer is selected for the door material and finish. Oil-based primer is used for flush doors and specialist primer for fire doors.
5. Finish Coats
Satin or gloss is applied in two coats minimum. Doors are painted from panel to rail to stile. Handles are removed before painting and refitted on completion.

Door Painting Costs in York
Prices below are estimates only. Every set of doors is different. Call 01904 935508 for a precise quote.
What Drives the Price
Door type. Flush doors in good condition cost less than original Victorian panelled doors. Stripping required. Heavy paint build-up requires stripping before painting, which adds cost but is the correct approach.
Volume. Six or more doors in a single visit cost less per door than one or two doors alone.
Typical Ranges
Set of six original internal doors (Victorian semi, stripped and repainted): £700 to £1,100. Single flush door with frame (modern property): £80 to £120 including preparation.
