Wood Painting Services
Interior Hardwood
Hardwood floors, staircases, and joinery in Victorian and Edwardian properties benefit from staining and varnishing that brings out the grain. Original floorboards are often pine or Douglas fir that has been painted over.
We assess the timber species and condition at the site visit. The appropriate stain, oil, or varnish is specified based on the wood type, traffic level, and desired appearance. For the full exterior programme, see our exterior painting page.
Exterior Timber
Exterior timber in York’s climate faces persistent moisture, UV exposure, and frost damage cycles. Window frames, fascias, soffits, bargeboards, and garden structures all require appropriate exterior timber products.
We specify correctly for each external timber type. Sash windows get durable exterior gloss or satin. For sash window and casement frame detail, see our window frame painting page.
Staining and Varnishing
Staining and varnishing natural timber is a different process from painting. The timber surface must be correctly prepared, the grain direction worked with, and the product applied in the correct coat sequence.
We advise on stain colour and varnish type at the site visit. The right product depends on the timber species, the desired tone, and the exposure the surface will receive.
Stripping and Restoration
Original period joinery in properties across Clifton, Bishopthorpe Road, and Wigginton has often been painted multiple times over decades. Stripping back to bare timber restores the original profile and gives the subsequent finish the best possible base.
We use hot air guns and chemical strippers as appropriate. For the full door painting process, see our door painting page.

Here’s How It Works
1. Timber Assessment
We inspect every timber element in scope, assess existing finish condition, identify any rot, and agree on stripping requirements. The appropriate product is specified for each element based on species, condition, and exposure.
2. Stripping Where Required
Joinery with heavy paint build-up or failing existing finish is stripped back to sound timber. Hot air gun or chemical stripper is selected based on the timber type and surrounding materials.
3. Rot Treatment
Any soft or compromised timber sections are treated with a timber consolidant before filling. We do not fill over soft timber without treating it first.
4. Preparation
Sanded to the appropriate profile for the product being applied. Stained surfaces require a finer sanding than painted surfaces. All sanding dust is removed before any product is applied.
5. Product Application
Stain, oil, varnish, or paint applied in the correct coat sequence. Each coat dries fully before the next. Exterior products are applied in dry conditions above five degrees Celsius.

Wood Painting Costs in York
Prices below are estimates only. Every timber project is different. Call 01904 935508 for a precise quote.

What Drives the Price
Wood painting costs depend on the timber element type, the surface area, and the preparation required. Period joinery with multiple previous coats requires stripping before any new finish can be applied.
Preparation Required
Stripping is the most time-intensive part of any timber painting project. Joinery requiring only light preparation costs less. The more complex the moulding, the more time is required per linear metre.
Product Choice
A penetrating oil or stain costs less per litre than a two-part varnish or specialist exterior system. We specify the right product for the timber type and use.
Typical Price Ranges
Original internal woodwork throughout a period cottage (doors, frames, skirting, window surrounds, The Green, Wigginton): £900 to £1,600 depending on condition and detail.
Exterior timber set (sash windows, fascias, front door, Victorian terrace, Heworth Road): £600 to £1,200. Staircase including handrail, newel posts, and banisters (Victorian terrace, Bishopthorpe Road): £500 to £900 depending on spindle count. For fence and garden timber, see our fence painting page.
