Timber Sash Frames
Original sash windows in Victorian and Edwardian terraces across Heworth are a significant period feature. These frames are often in a cycle of flaking paint, worsening with each topcoat applied over loose material.
The correct approach is to strip back to sound timber, treat any rot, prime correctly, and apply a durable exterior finish. Sashes are checked to open and close freely after painting.
Casement Windows
Casement windows in 1930s–50s Acomb and Heworth semis have timber frames that have been repainted multiple times. The meeting rail and window reveal are the most vulnerable areas for paint build-up and moisture ingress.
We assess each window at the site visit and strip where required. A correctly prepared casement window holds its finish well for five to eight years.
uPVC Repainting
uPVC windows can be repainted with specialist adhesion systems. The factory finish yellows and looks dated over time. Repainting to a different colour, including modern anthracite grey or black, gives the property an updated appearance.
We clean and degrease the uPVC, apply a specialist adhesion primer, and finish with a compatible topcoat. We advise honestly on expected lifespan before starting.
Fascias, Soffits, and Sills
Window sills, fascias, and soffits are part of the complete exterior window surround. We include these in scope alongside window frame painting where requested. A freshly painted window frame with a weathered fascia reads as incomplete.
Timber fascias and soffits in good condition can be repainted. Where they are beyond painting, we advise on replacement before our work begins.
Preparation and Priming
Preparation is the single most important stage of any window frame painting project. We strip loose material, treat rot with a suitable consolidant, apply the correct exterior wood primer, and apply durable finish coats.
Skipping any stage fails within one to two years. For a complete exterior programme, see our exterior painting page.

Here’s How It Works
1. Frame-by-frame assessment
We inspect every window in the scope. Flaking, rot, poorly bonded sections, and unsound finish are noted. Stripping requirements and rot treatment are agreed before starting.
2. Stripping
Loose and flaking finish is stripped using a hot air gun or chemical stripper as appropriate. We strip to sound timber on every frame where the existing finish cannot be retained.
3. Rot treatment
Any soft or compromised timber sections are treated with an appropriate timber consolidant before filler is applied. We do not fill over soft timber and paint over it.
4. Priming
Bare timber sections receive a quality exterior wood primer. Previously painted sections in sound condition receive a light sanding and proceed to finish coat. The correct primer for the timber type is specified at the start.
5. Finish coats and operation check
Two finish coats of exterior gloss or satin are applied. Sash windows are checked to slide freely before the paint is fully cured. Casement windows are checked to open and close without sticking.

Window Frame Painting Costs in York
Prices below are estimates only. Every window is different. Call 01904 935508 for a precise quote.

What Drives the Price
Window frame painting costs depend on the window type, the number of frames, and the preparation required. Three things drive the price: window type and size, preparation required, and number of windows.
Window Type and Preparation
A large original sash window in a three-storey Victorian terrace costs more to prepare and paint than a standard casement window in a 1970s Rawcliffe semi. Frames requiring full stripping back to bare timber cost more than frames in sound condition — stripping is the most time-intensive part of the work.
Typical Price Ranges
Set of four sash window frames (Victorian semi, Heworth, stripped and repainted): £500 to £800 depending on timber condition. Standard casement window (1930s semi, Acomb, light preparation and two coats): £80 to £150 per window.
Full exterior window set (three-storey Victorian terrace, Bishopthorpe Road, 8–10 windows): £900 to £1,800 depending on timber condition and access requirements. For a complete exterior programme including masonry and front door, see our exterior painting page.
