Masonry Painters in York

York Painters are masonry painters working on rendered walls, exposed brick, stone facades, and garden structures across York and the surrounding villages.
What we cover:
- Rendered and sand-and-cement walls
- Exposed brick and hand-made brick facades
- York stone and natural stone elevations
- Breathable paint systems for period masonry
- Biological growth treatment before painting
Period cottages on The Green and Wigginton Road include original stone and hand-made brick elevations. Standard masonry paint without a breathable primer traps moisture in the wall, causing rapid failure on north-facing and shaded elevations.

Rendered Walls
Render is the most common exterior surface on inter-war semis and modern builds. Before painting, we inspect for structural cracks, hollow areas, and poorly bonded sections.
Loose render is cut back and made good. We specify a flexible exterior masonry paint to accommodate York’s temperature swings without cracking the paint film. For the full exterior programme, see our exterior painting page.
Exposed Brick
Exposed brick on York’s Victorian and Edwardian street frontages is hand-made brick laid in lime mortar. This combination requires a breathable system rather than a waterproof masonry paint.
Sealing the surface traps moisture in the wall and accelerates deterioration of the lime mortar joints. We specify breathable masonry primers and compatible breathable emulsions for hand-made brick and lime mortar construction.
Stone Facades
York stone and natural stone elevations require the same breathable approach as hand-made brick. Stone is porous and breathes naturally — standard waterproof masonry paint causes moisture build-up.
We use mineral silicate paints and breathable masonry systems on all stone surfaces. These products are designed for this surface type and perform correctly on historic building stock.
Breathable Coating Systems
A breathable paint system for period masonry consists of a breathable primer followed by one or two coats of a breathable masonry emulsion or silicate paint. The system allows moisture to move out naturally and prevents rain penetration.
For timber and woodwork alongside exterior masonry, see our wood painting page.
Biological Growth Treatment
Biological growth on north-facing and shaded masonry is treated with an appropriate mould treatment. Coating over untreated algae, moss, or lichen fails within months.
We treat and allow adequate dwell time, then rinse and proceed to preparation. The surface must be clear before any coating is applied.

Here’s How It Works
1. Surface Assessment
We inspect every masonry section, note the surface type, assess the existing coating, check for cracks and hollow areas, and identify any biological growth. A paint system is agreed before starting.
2. Biological Treatment
Mould treatment is applied to affected sections. It dwells for the specified period. The surface is rinsed and allowed to dry completely before preparation begins.
3. Masonry Repairs
Structural cracks are opened and filled with appropriate exterior filler. Hollow render sections are cut back and made good. Loose mortar joints are raked out and repointed. The surface must be sound before coating is applied.
4. Priming
The correct primer is applied for the surface type. Breathable primer for period brick, stone, and lime mortar. Standard masonry primer for modern render and cavity brick.
5. Finish Coats
One or two finish coats are applied depending on the product and condition. North-facing and high-exposure sections receive additional coats where needed. We plan around York’s weather to avoid applying coatings before rain.

Masonry Painting Costs in York
Prices below are estimates only. Every masonry project is different. Call 01904 935508 for a precise quote.

What Drives the Price
Masonry painting typically costs between £15 and £35 per square metre, including preparation, priming, and finish coats. Total project costs vary widely based on property size and surface condition.
Surface Type and Condition
Modern render on a 1990s Haxby semi is the most straightforward. Period stone or hand-made brick requires breathable specialist products that cost more per litre than standard masonry paint.
Extensive biological growth, cracked render, or hollow sections add preparation time. Preparation is the most variable element of any masonry project.
Access and Surface Area
A two-storey property with more wall area costs more than a bungalow. Properties requiring access equipment add to the total.
Typical Price Ranges
Front and side elevation (period cottage, The Green, Wigginton): £900 to £1,600 depending on surface area and condition.
Two-storey semi (1930s, Acomb or Heworth, rendered walls): £1,200 to £2,000 for front and rear. Full exterior masonry (three-storey Victorian terrace, Bishopthorpe Road): £2,000 to £3,500 depending on access and surface condition.
