Living Room Painters in York

York Painters are living room painters working across period and modern properties in the city’s inner suburbs and surrounding villages.
What we cover:
- Walls and ceilings in living rooms and reception rooms
- Bay windows, chimney breasts, and alcoves
- Feature walls and bold colour schemes
- Coving, cornicing, and original plasterwork
- Woodwork, skirting boards, and door frames
Inter-war semis on Acomb Road have bay-fronted living rooms. The bay ceiling plaster is often a different age and condition from the main ceiling — we handle this preparation correctly on every bay-fronted living room.

Living Room Painting Services
Walls and Ceiling
Living rooms in Bishopthorpe Road Victorian terraces often have high ceilings with chimney breast alcoves and original cornicing. We paint walls, ceilings, and all woodwork as a complete room, with each surface assessed individually at the site visit.
Ceiling height requires hand-cutting at the ceiling-wall junction. We do not rely on roller application close to cornicing and moulded plasterwork. For a complete interior repaint, see our interior painting page.
Bay Window and Alcoves
The bay window in an Acomb or Heworth 1930s semi is usually the room’s natural focal point. Bay ceiling sections are often a different age and condition from the main ceiling — uniform priming before the topcoat ensures a consistent finish.
Alcoves on either side of the chimney breast are a common source of feature colour interest. We paint alcove backs and ceilings in the agreed colour as part of the full room scope.
Chimney Breast
The chimney breast in a Victorian or Edwardian living room is often the most prominent wall. Treating it as a feature wall in a deeper or contrasting colour is a classic choice.
We advise on the colour relationship between the chimney breast and surrounding walls. For textured or limewash finishes, see our feature wall painting page.
Coving and Cornicing
Period coving in Edwardian semis needs hand-cutting at ceiling and wall junctions. We do not use tape at these junctions — every coving junction is cut by hand to a precise line.
Deeper cornicing in Victorian terraces takes more time per room. We factor this into every quote.
Colour Consultation
Living room colours affect the whole character of the home. We advise on colour and sheen at the site visit.
North-facing living rooms have different light conditions from south-facing rooms. We advise on colours appropriate for the specific room.

Here’s How It Works
1. Site Visit and Scope
We assess the room, note the bay and alcove condition, and discuss colour preferences. The scope is agreed and written up before work begins.
2. Preparation
Bay ceiling and main ceiling sections are primed individually to equalise absorption. Cracks and gaps at coving junctions are filled and sanded. Alcove backs are prepared in the same session.
3. Priming
A stabilising primer is applied to all areas with uneven absorption. Period walls with lime plaster get a breathable primer. Bare timber gets a wood primer.
4. Paint Application
Ceiling and coving first, then walls and chimney breast, then alcoves, then woodwork. Each section dries fully before the adjacent section is painted.
5. Final Walkthrough
We inspect the full room including coving junctions, alcove edges, and skirting board lines before leaving. Touch-ups are completed before we close the job.

Living Room Painting Costs in York
Prices below are estimates only. Every living room is different. Call 01904 935508 for a precise quote.

Typical Price Range
A standard living room repaint typically costs between £400 and £900, depending on size, bay and alcove complexity, and the period features present.
What Drives the Price
Bay and alcove configuration is the biggest variable — a living room with a bay, chimney breast, and alcoves has considerably more cutting-in than a plain rectangular room. Ceiling condition and surface condition also affect the total.
Period walls with lime plaster or multiple previous paint layers need more preparation than smooth modern plaster.
Typical Price Ranges by Property
Living room repaint including bay and ceiling (1930s semi, Acomb Road): £450 to £680. Victorian living room with chimney breast and alcoves (Bishopthorpe Road): £600 to £950 including woodwork and period cornicing.
Modern living room (1980s detached, Haxby or Poppleton, plain walls and ceiling): £350 to £550.
