Kitchen Cabinet Painting in York

Dark grey fitted kitchen cabinets freshly painted by York Painters

York Painters provide kitchen cabinet painting in York, covering fitted kitchens across the city’s inner suburbs and surrounding villages, from Poppleton and Haxby to Heworth, Fulford, and Bishopthorpe Road.

What we cover:

  • Spray-painted cabinet doors and drawer fronts
  • Solid wood, MDF, and painted timber cabinets
  • Colour selection and finish choice
  • Cabinet painting versus full replacement advice
  • Carcass painting and interior shelf painting

Detached homes in Poppleton typically have larger fitted kitchens than terraces. A clear phased schedule resolves disruption concerns — we plan the schedule at quotation so you know what to expect daily.

Kitchen Cabinet Painting Services

Spray-Painted Doors

A sprayed cabinet door has an even, factory-quality finish that a brush or roller cannot replicate. We remove doors and drawer fronts, then spray them in our workshop under controlled conditions — eliminating brush marks and creating a smooth, consistent texture.

Spraying in a workshop prevents overspray on worktops, appliances, and walls. For complete kitchen repaints with walls and ceilings, see our interior painting page.

Solid Wood vs MDF Cabinets

Solid wood and MDF doors require different preparation. Solid wood cabinets may have open grain that needs filling and sanding before a smooth finish is achieved. MDF requires an appropriate primer to prevent edges from swelling with moisture.

We assess the material at the site visit and specify the correct preparation for each type. Skipping the primer stage on MDF is the most common cause of cabinet failure.

Colour Selection

Cabinet colour affects the whole kitchen feel. Moving from cream to deep navy or forest green changes the room dramatically. We advise on colour at the site visit.

Sample colours can be applied to one or two doors before committing the full project. We build this into the schedule where required.

Cabinet Painting versus Replacement

Cabinet painting is typically one-fifth to one-third of the cost of replacement. Where carcasses are sound, the layout works, and existing doors are in good condition, painting is the right choice.

We advise honestly if the doors are too worn or damaged to give a durable result.

Worktops and Carcasses

Where cabinet carcass interiors are to be painted, we include these on request. Worktops can be painted with specialist worktop paint.

We advise on realistic durability before any worktop is included in the scope.

Here’s How It Works

1. Site Visit and Door Count

We visit the kitchen, count all doors and drawer fronts, assess the material and condition, and agree the colour. A written scope and schedule is produced before starting.

2. Removal

Doors and drawer fronts are removed. Hardware (hinges and handles) is removed from each door. We label each door so it returns to the correct position.

3. Preparation

Doors are cleaned, degreased, filled where necessary, and sanded to the correct preparation profile. The correct primer is applied for the material type.

4. Spraying

Doors are sprayed in our workshop in controlled conditions. Multiple coats are applied with full drying time between each. The number of coats depends on the colour and the base.

5. Rehang and Handover

Doors are returned and rehung. Hardware is refitted. We inspect every door from the front in good light and address any imperfections before handover.

Typical Price Range

Kitchen cabinet painting typically costs between £900 and £3,000 depending on the number of doors, the material, and the finish choice.

Door Count

A small terrace kitchen in Tang Hall with ten doors costs less than a large Poppleton detached with twenty-two doors. Every additional door adds material and labour.

Material Condition

Solid wood doors with open grain and previous paint layers need more preparation than MDF. We assess and include preparation in the written quote.

Finish Choice

A standard eggshell finish costs less than gloss spray or a specialist satin system. Heritage colours from premium ranges cost more per litre.

Typical Price Ranges

Kitchen cabinet respray (detached home, 16–20 door fronts): £1,600 to £2,600 depending on unit count and finish choice. Smaller fitted kitchen (inter-war semi, 10–14 door fronts): £900 to £1,500.

Large kitchen with island (Haxby or Wigginton detached, 22+ doors): £2,200 to £3,200.
